Australian composer Liza Lim is internationally renowned for her music’s visceral energy and vibrant colours. In her Online Masterclass series for Sounds Unheard Liza will explore the sonic possibilities of the humble woodblock, taking us along on a journey from one of her earliest compositions to her most recent opera.
In part two, Liza looks at musical dialogues, bridging the gap between the voices of different instruments, and how this can provide fascinating ideas for composers. In this masterclass we’ll look at two of Liza’s works from different periods: a duet for woodblock and trumpet written when Liza was just 13 years old, and her 2015 violin concerto Speak Be Silent.
Join us next week for part three, where we’ll look at the role of the woodblock in Liza’s most recent opera Tree of Codes. To learn more about Liza and to hear more of her music, please visit her website or soundcloud.
